MISSION STATEMENT

ISLAND FM’s objective is to present to the Bahamian community a type of programming that will enhance the local listener’s appreciation of its worth while making visitors to The Bahamas feel at home.

ISLAND FM’S GOAL

Simply put, to continue to achieve a position in the marketplace that, whenever a guest to our Island asks any local resident where he can get the biggest slice of Bahamiana, the answer is made automatically and without hesitation, “ISLAND FM!”

THE HISTORY

Broadcasting has been a natural progression for the Carter family. Founded by the late Harcourt C. Carter, Sr. in 1948, the Carter Record Shop provided the springboard for a number of music, entertainment and communication related businesses in the ensuing years such as Cody’s and Carter Marketing. Since the inception of the latter, in 1992 by Charles Carter, veteran broadcaster whose voice and communication expertise is known throughout the archipelago, Carter Marketing has originated, developed and executed some of the most successful promotional campaigns in the Bahamian marketplace. No matter what kind of business it was, Bahamian music was always central to all Carter endeavours and the family prides itself on being affiliated throughout its history with many successful projects aimed at bringing the works of Bahamian artists to the forefront.

It comes as no surprise, then, that it has long been Charles Carter’s dream to create a broadcast institution that would be known for its appreciation of Bahamian Culture and to make that idea an economic success. When the Government of The Bahamas issued a broadcast license to Carter Broadcasting Bahamas Limited in 1999, Charles Carter’s dream started to become a reality.

THE STATION
Located on Dowdeswell Street in a building that is over half a century old, the former law chambers of the legendary Bahamian lawyer T. A. Toote, the state-of-the-art studios of ISLAND FM utilizes the latest in 21st century digital technology that ensures its unsurpassed performance as one of the Bahamas’ leading radio stations. ISLAND FM’s tower is located at St. Augustine’s campus in Fox Hill and guarantees the clearest broadcast signal in New Providence on its designated frequency 102.9 FM.

OUR SOUND AND OUR AUDIENCE
Aimed directly at the over-35-year-old market, which is the second fastest growing segment of the Bahamian society as well as the most affluent and influential, our innovative format makes ISLAND FM the first radio station in the nation dedicated to providing a place where Bahamian music can thrive.

Although Bahamian music is the main ingredient on the musical menu of ISLAND FM, we also extend the island flavour to embrace the best music of this entire sun-blessed region, including great sounds from Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica, Trinidad and Barbados. In addition, ISLAND FM features the most popular Bahamian classics (30’s-80’s), all within an easy listening format.

THE PERSONALITIES
Our on-air hosts, are not only knowledgeable about the music and the artists but also about the times and events that inspired the compositions. For example, Ronnie Butler’s famous song, “Burma Road,” is a significant song in Bahamian history that speaks about momentous changes in the cultural, social and economic fabric of The Bahamas. On ISLAND FM, whenever this song is played, it will be coupled with pertinent information on the event it salutes so that the music becomes a more meaningful statement to our listeners and the listening experience much more relevant to our society.

IN CLOSING

ISLAND FM is an idea whose time continues to blossom. Its commercial programming is widely accepted across all demographic lines and while radio advertising has been Island FM’s primary avenue of selling in The Bahamas, with the introduction of this, our new website, we look forward to venturing into the online market while providing advertisers and listeners alike with the same professionalism as we always have and bringing some Island flavour to the world wide web. In short the true advantage of ISLAND FM is that we know what you want to hear when it comes to “our music” while also being experts in the advertising terrain of the Bahamas. We expect and continue to set the standard wherever our presence is felt, because at ISLAND FM we are not only up to the challenge; we look forward to it!
